Chinese AI Companies Expand Beyond Chatbots to Broader Applications

Prime Highlights:

Chinese AI companies, including Baidu, DeepSeek, and ByteDance, are advancing beyond chatbots to develop multifunctional AI tools.

Baidu’s Wenku platform, integrated with generative AI, reached 40 million paying users and saw a 60% increase in revenue in 2024.

Gartner reports over 10% of businesses in China now use generative AI, reflecting rapid adoption across industries.

Key Background:

Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) companies are rapidly evolving from basic chatbot models to advanced, multifunctional AI tools, signaling a significant shift in the country’s technological landscape. Notable Chinese firms like DeepSeek and ByteDance have made impressive strides in developing AI systems that rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and many are now building on this foundation to offer more sophisticated solutions.

Baidu, for example, has seen success with its Wenku platform, which integrates generative AI to assist users in creating presentations and documents. By the end of 2024, the platform reached 40 million paying users, with revenue up by 60% year-over-year. Recent updates to the platform now allow AI to generate presentations from company financial reports, illustrating the growing sophistication of AI applications.

Gartner’s Ben Yan reports that over 10% of businesses in China are utilizing generative AI, up from 8% six months ago, underscoring the rapid adoption of AI technologies. This surge in usage is also spurred by the development of AI agents, which automate entire workflows, from searching to booking. Tencent is preparing to integrate these AI agents into its popular WeChat platform, marking another significant leap in AI adoption.

Chinese AI models are also becoming increasingly integrated into smartphones, with local brands like Honor, Xiaomi, and Vivo offering AI capabilities tailored to regional preferences. These advancements are being powered by AI models that run directly on devices, minimizing reliance on cloud-based services.

Despite regulatory hurdles, such as the need for official certification before launch, Chinese companies continue to innovate, with some AI applications already making their mark internationally. For instance, Alibaba’s Accio AI-powered search engine has garnered 500,000 users globally, revolutionizing product sourcing for small businesses. As Chinese AI companies continue to innovate and expand their capabilities, they are positioning themselves to compete not only with Western counterparts but also to dominate the global AI landscape.
