I’m Alaa Obeid, a 40-year-old professional with over 15 years of experience in Healthcare Management, including operations, performance management, commercial development, project deployment, marketing, and communications.
Driven by a passion for operational excellence, I am committed to enhancing healthcare delivery. My focus on improving patient care through efficient operations, innovative processes, and strong leadership inspires me. I believe that well-run organizations can significantly elevate patient outcomes and service quality.
Could you please give a brief introduction to your company and its inception story?
Reem Hospital was founded with a visionary goal to address the strategic medical needs of the UAE’s health system and deliver exceptional healthcare services to the community. Recognizing the immense pressures modern life places on individuals and healthcare systems, we embarked on creating a multi-specialty hospital that emphasizes clinical excellence, operational efficiency, and patient-centered care.
Despite opening during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Reem Hospital has since emerged as a premier destination for medical services. Four years on, it stands as a beacon of wellness, committed to enhancing the health and well-being of our society.
What do you consider the most critical skills for a COO, and how have you developed these skills throughout your career?
The most critical skill for a COO is knowledge of all the business functions and the ability to find harmony between all those functions to achieve the company’s strategic objectives. This would require the COO to master strategic thinking, operational efficiency, leadership, and effective communication.
I’ve developed these skills through a combination of formal education, hands-on experience, and continuous learning. Over the last 16 years, I’ve led complex projects, managed cross-functional teams, and navigated challenging situations that required quick decision-making and strategic foresight.
Mentorship and networking have also played a key role in refining these skills, allowing me to learn from industry leaders and apply best practices within our organization.
How do you prioritize and balance the various responsibilities that come with the COO position?
As a COO, prioritization and balance are achieved through a strategic approach. I focus on aligning daily operations with our organization’s long-term goals. I prioritize tasks based on their impact on patient care, operational efficiency, and financial performance.
Delegating responsibilities to capable team members allows me to manage time effectively and ensures that critical areas receive the attention they need. Regular reviews and updates with department heads help maintain balance and ensure that all aspects of the organization are functioning harmoniously.
Can you share an example of a significant challenge you faced as a COO and how you overcame it?
A significant challenge I faced was optimizing resource allocation during and after the COVID-19 pandemic to manage the hospital’s rapid growth. The key issue was balancing quality patient care with the need to scale operations effectively.
To address this, I spearheaded an initiative to redesign our workflow processes, improve nurse-to-patient ratios, and increase doctor coverage weekly. We invested in staff training and advanced technology to streamline operations and ensure consistent care delivery.
